VertNet Data Portal FAQ

Do I need to register with GBIF to download data from the VertNet Data Portal?

Yes, you need to register with GBIF. To improve sustainability and to keep data in the VertNet portal as current as possible, we are now sharing GBIF’s data index. As a result, download requests will be processed through GBIF. Registration is FREE and it will maintain history of your searches and downloads for easy reference. To register, visit GBIF, and click the “Login” in the upper right-hand corner. Next, select the REGISTER tab and get started.

How can I publish my collection data to VertNet, GBIF, iDigBio and other data portals?

If you are ready to publish data, simply contact us and let us know. We’ll follow up with you and get the processes started.

Who do I contact if I have questions about, or find errors in, the data?

We recommend that you contact the data publisher to ask questions and to communicate any issues with their data. If you cannot reach the publisher, you are welcome to contact us and we can help you to notify the publisher directly.

How do I cite data and datasets?

You can follow the citation guidelines in the VertNet Norms for Data Use and Publication OR you can follow the guidance provided by GBIF’s Citation Guidelines.
